Jamo Negro | Black iguana | Cayos Cochinos, Honduras | Fundación Cayos Cochinos | Ctenosaura melanosterna

Cayos Cochinos, a picturesque archipelago off the coast of Honduras, is not only a haven for sun-soaked beaches and crystal-clear waters but also home to the remarkable Ctenosaura melanosterna, commonly known as Jamo Negro or the black-breasted spiny-tailed iguana. As an endemic species, the Jamo Negro holds a special place in the biodiversity of this tropical paradise

This unique iguana species is primarily found in two exclusive regions of Honduras – Cayos Cochinos and Valle del Aguán. However, its survival in these areas is not without challenges. Threatened by poaching and the consumption of its eggs, the Jamo Negro faces an ongoing battle against predation in its natural habitats.

Measuring an average of 9.5 inches in length and weighing around 1.3 lbs in Cayos Cochinos, male Jamo Negros are relatively small in size. However, they can grow up to an impressive 12.5 inches in length and weigh up to 3.1 lbs. This showcases the diversity within the species and the remarkable adaptability of these spiny-tailed iguanas to their environments.

To ensure the survival of this unique species, Fundación Cayos Cochinos has taken up the responsibility of providing protection and monitoring for the Jamo Negro. With conservation efforts in place, the foundation aims to safeguard the iguana's habitat and combat the threats posed by poaching and egg consumption.

By focusing on the preservation of this endemic species, the foundation not only contributes to the overall biodiversity of the region but also emphasizes the importance of coexisting with and protecting the natural world. The Jamo Negro stands as a symbol of resilience and the delicate balance required to sustain the rich ecosystems of Cayos Cochinos.

In a world where biodiversity is increasingly under threat, the efforts to protect and monitor the Jamo Negro highlight the significance of community-driven conservation initiatives. Through collective action and awareness, we can ensure that these fascinating creatures continue to thrive, enriching the biodiversity of Cayos Cochinos for generations to come.
