Conduct

When visiting Cayos Cochinos, it's important to be mindful of your conduct to ensure a respectful and responsible experience. Here are some conducts to consider:

  1. Respect the Environment: Cayos Cochinos is a fragile and protected ecosystem. Respect the natural surroundings by refraining from littering, damaging coral reefs, or disturbing wildlife. Follow designated paths and avoid touching or removing any natural elements.

  2. Follow Conservation Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations of the Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Cayos Cochinos. These guidelines are in place to preserve the biodiversity and maintain the ecological balance of the region. Adhere to fishing restrictions and respect the boundaries of the protected zones.

  3. Support Local Communities: Cayos Cochinos is home to indigenous Garífuna communities. Show respect for their traditions, customs, and privacy. Seek permission before taking photographs of individuals and be sensitive to cultural norms. Consider supporting local businesses and artisans by purchasing locally-made products.

  4. Practice Responsible Diving and Snorkeling: If engaging in water activities, such as diving or snorkeling, follow responsible practices. Avoid touching or stepping on coral reefs, as they are delicate and easily damaged. Maintain a safe distance from marine life and refrain from feeding or chasing animals.

  5. Minimize Your Environmental Footprint: Reduce your impact on the environment by using reusable water bottles, avoiding single-use plastics, and properly disposing of waste in designated bins. Conserve water and electricity when possible, and be mindful of your energy consumption during your stay. Make sure to leave no trash behind!
