Training in Blue Land Crab Monitoring Methods to Support Conservation in Cayos Cochinos | Fundación Cayos Cochinos

This weekend, wildlife technicians from FUCSA conducted a training session at the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge focused on monitoring methods for the blue land crab (Cardisoma guanhumi).

The training included practical demonstrations and discussions on techniques for assessing population density, habitat use, and potential environmental threats to the species. Participants learned standardized methods for data collection, such as marking individuals, identifying burrow locations, and recording environmental factors that influence their distribution.

The objective of this training is to replicate these monitoring techniques in Cayos Cochinos, where the blue land crab plays a key role in the coastal ecosystem. By gathering data on population density and other ecological factors, researchers aim to better understand the status of the species in the area and inform conservation strategies to protect its habitat.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen ecological monitoring across protected areas in Honduras, fostering collaboration among organizations and local communities to promote biodiversity conservation.
