Location
Cayos Cochinos are a group of two small islands (Cayo Menor and Cayo Mayor)
and 13 small coral cays lying 19 miles northeast of La Ceiba on the northern
Honduran coast.
In 1993 a team of business leaders concerned with the conservation
of the Honduran coast and its wildlife together with the Swiss conservation
foundation called AVINA, formed the Honduran Coral Reef Foundation (HCRF) which
lobbied the Honduran Government to obtain protection for these beautiful islands.
In 2003, Legistlative decree 114-2003 designated the Cayos Cochinos as a Marine
Natural Monument and The HCRF as the managing agency responsible for the conservation
of the islands for the next 10 years. In 2004, the official Management Plan
was approved. The protected area covers 489.25 km2 and HCRF are responsible
for the management of the area (see below).
